Body Session 18: Rear body work and further painting

Today we move back to the rear of the vehicle with a new curved wooden section added to the offside corner which will hold the far offside bumper bracket as well as the bottom of the offside rear panel.  We also tackle the removal of the larger rear centre bumper brackets which proved very problematic.   Each one had corroded boots which had to be removed.  This was only done unfortunately by removing the sections behind and then applying heat to the corroded bolts before hammering them to free them from the box sections.  The final coat of paint is also added to the entrance door poles and internal frame.

The new wooden curved section is meticulously cut to the desired body curvature and tested in place.

The offside rear centre bumper brackets which before removal.  This would prove very problematic and would take hours to remove, especially the larger rear centre bolt that passes from inside the boot area through to the bracket.  As both were corroded it was impossible to remove by turning.  A number of attempts were made but without any success.  Time and care was therefore taken to remove both bolts by fully removing both box sections and side sections between the bracket and inner panels to get to the bolts.  Heat was then applied to the offside rear bolt first (diolch yn fawr Dewi / thank you very much Dewi) before it was hammered backwards and forwards before it finally was removed.  The nearside rear boot removal from the box section will be the next job.

The bumper bracket bolt is seen here from inside the boot.
