Body Session 15: Day 2 - Front entrance step

Front entrance step

Today we begin by measuring the section between the front entrance step and front bulkhead with the aim of replacing the woodwork that was previously removed.

However in order to ensure that the wooden section is of the correct width we need to make sure that the panel to the left of the front entrance step is secure.  We therefore decide to move to the front entrance step, and complete this section.

Unfortunately in the world of vehicle restoration there is no instructions book, and as such careful thinking, measuring and then cautious action takes place in ensuring that CRG163 is put back together carefully and meticulously in avoiding any issues further on.

Working closely with Sion we leave no stone unturned as we work through every part thoroughly in future proofing the vehicle in every way.  We both have very high standards, and CRG163 deserves no less.  Sion is absolutely meticulous in his approach.

Our first action is to remedy the spacing that exists between the centre sections and front part of the step.  By the fact that they don’t connect, this weakens the structure considerably that will hold the final step section once in place.

Whilst a new bracket has been previously fabricated in preparation for the entrance step, a second is created today.

The first of the new brackets are fixed into place and fits perfectly.

Both new brackets are fitted and quickly strengthens the whole underside of the front entrance step section.

The new brackets are seen fron a different angle, now secured to the step structure.

Side steel sections are now re-fitted to the step section (left and right), with the whole section sprayed with a high build grey primer that acts as a corrosion preventative, safeguarding surfaces preventing rust formation.

At the same time we also need to replace rotten wood to the right of the entrance step.  New wood is quickly shaped.

New wood is placed into place and secured.

Sion in deep concentration as the first section of flooring for the entrance step is tested in place.

The first section of the new floor for the entrance step looks brilliant when tested in place.

We quickly notice that the front of the entrance step seems lower than what is should be as a result of heavy footfall and use since 1970.  The first section of flooring is removed so that we can consider how best we rectify the height of the step.

We therefore fabricate a new steel section that is placed underneath the existing step structure but secures each side so that the elevation and height of the step is maintained as it should be.  This work will be continued next time.

The search continues for other parts.
