Body Session 15: Day 3 - CRG163 now has a new entrance step

CRG163 has a new entrance step

Today we take a major step forward as CRG163’s new entrance step is put in place.

This is a significant step as we remember how disheartened we were when we initially inspected this section of the vehicle earlier this year, only to find that all of the wood was rotten and had to be replaced.  The entrance step was stripped right down to the bare frame.

Today we strengthen and treat the step frame with an additional section of steel that will provide additional and vital support.

Over the years the step had sagged unfortunately so it was necessary to elevate the frame with a bottle jack whilst the support steel section was put in place as well as complete new bolts all round.

Each stage of today was carefully taken.  The care and approach taken by Sion was as always inspirational to watch.

Today was a very positive day as we continued to build back and take advantage of the good weather.

The new steel section is treated before being fixed to the entrance step frame.  This will be placed underneath the existing step frame for further support.

CRG163’s new entrance step will be made of layers of wood.  Here we see both layers cut to shape in preparation to being fixed into place.

Another angle of both wooden sections that will form the new entrance step.  Both sections have been carefully cut as well as layered behind to fit the entrance step frame.

The new steel section bar is placed into place in preparation for the new wood.

New more heavy duty bolts are put into place in order to provide maximum strength to the step frame and woodwork once in place.  The bottle jack in the image has been used to raise the step frame to its original position as the step is carefully put together.

New bolts all round are put in place to strengthen each sub section of the step frame.

After careful further measuring, circular cuts for the entrance door poles as well as tweaks, the first section of the step flooring is put into place.

The next layer of new wood with carefully cut out holes for the entrance door pole is put into place on top of the first section, again carefully measured, adjusted and then put into place.  Silicone and special industrial glue is used as well as small screws to attach both layers.  The top and treated aluminium section will be added next to finish off the step.

Once the aluminium is added on top of the wooden sections, bolts are added to secure the whole step layers and frame together.

A crucial moment as the bottle jack is finally removed to see if the new step has maintained its new elevation.  We are glad to say that it has been a success.

Now for testing the new step.  A similar photograph of a similar angle of the same location taken earlier this year was very gloomy in all honesty as the whole step was removed, right down to the frame.

Sion captures a positive smile from me as the new completed step is tested.  All the work has been a total success thankfully.

I capture a cheeky smile from Sion as we are both very relieved that the new entrance step has been successfully put into place.  There is no doubt on the talent Sion has who stops at nothing less than the highest of standards always.

The completed new entrance step in place.  New floor vinyl will need to be added at a later date before the edging panel and non slip steip is added.

The search continues for other parts.
