Body Session 15: Day 4 - door section woodwork is now complete

CRG163’s passenger door entrance, nearside windscreen and nearside front bumper woodwork is complete

Today we take another major step forward as all the woodwork around the passenger entrance door, nearside windscreen and nearside front bumper is completed.

Not only is the woodwork complete but also each section in this region of the vehicle is inter-linked with absolute precision and accuracy, down to the millimetre.

Utmost care is taken to make sure that each of the elements connects perfectly as well as making sure that the woodwork is protected long term in future proofing the vehicle, which has been the case throughout the restoration.

Throughout the installation of new woodwork, the vehicle’s panels are placed into place to make sure that everything sits as it all should.

As always Sion’s precision, care and standards of the highest degree pays dividend as all panels within this region of the vehicle are put in place albeit on a temporary basis.

Having finished late we were extremely pleased with the end result.  Next time all panels that have been fitted temporarily will be fixed permanently in place.

In all honesty, the photographs below do not do justice to the precision and standards undertaken with such a complicated section of the vehicle that involved so may inter-connected parts and the need to get measurements perfect.

The vertical nearside left steel piece is inserted and secured into the entrance door sectiom.

Sections are straightened and fitted into place.

We finish off securing the front passenger entrance step.  Sion is underneath the step whilst I screw from above the step.

Final steps of securing the front entrance step as I screw from above.

The front entrance step is now in place and holds perfectly after testing.

We can just about see Sion peering through the front section of the vehicle. The front cowl of the vehicle will be fitted into place several times during the day in ensuring that the vertical wooden sections are measured and fitted perfectly.

The first new wooden section is fitted between the lower nearside bumper section and entrance door frame.  A small plastic piece is added which will act as a water ‘drain-off’ if water from rain runs across the front bumper in protecting this section indefinitely.

Now to measure and fit the new vertical wooden section whilst the vehicle’s front cowl section is in place.

Sion and our very good friend John ‘Ffridd’ Davies.  John comes to see us regularly and has been extremely helpful in his research for specific front cowl bolts and front and rear number plate suppliers.  Thank you very much John for all of your valued help.  Diolch yn fawr iawn.

The new vertical wooden section is fitted between the vehicle’s front cowl section and passenger entrance section.  This is fine tuned to ensure a perfect fit.

The new vertical wooden section is joined with the new front steel bulkhead section.  The end of the bolts once fitted are cut down to ensure that the panel section fits.

The new vertical wooden section fits perfectly as the lower bumper panel and front cowl section fits perfectly.

The old deteriorated woodwork to the right of the passenger entrance door section is removed in preparation for new wood.

Remains of the removed old wood is seen.

We now try out the lower nearside front body panel to see if it fits.  A few adjustments and it fits perfectly.

New vertical wood is now put in place to the right of the passenger entrance door.

More panels are tested in place as well as the anti slip section at the front of the step.

The rebuilt passenger entrance step and door surround has now come a very long way.

The search continues for other parts.
