Bodywork Session 8: Offside rear

Today we move to CRG163’s offside rear.  Panels were carefully removed as always including the rear bumper for the first time from when the vehicle was new in 1970.  This revealed the vehicle’s original cream and black livery from 1970.  Woodwork underneath panels will need to be renewed as well as straightening a rear panel section from what appears to he some kind of collision.  We will also need to look at re-fabricating steel sections that fix the rear bumper to the vehicle.

Sion is an excellent craftsman, and doesn’t leave any stone unturned.  He is so precise and very meticulous in everything he does and produces nothing less than the very highest of standards.

We start off by removing the foot step from the offside panel under the emergency door.  Quickly we see that the wood surrounding this step has deteriorated badly.

The offside rear emergency panel step removed showing deteriorated screws.  These will be replaced in the same way as all other screws across the whole vehicle to date.

Now to tackle the offside panel underneath the emergency door.  We start off by chasing each screw underneath the paintwork and slowly cleaning around each one in turn for removal.  All the screws are in a bad way, so this element is very time consuming as we have found with all other panels across the vehicle as we have carefully removed each one in ensuring that nothing is damaged.

We also remove the step and woodwork underneath the emergency door as well as the lower panel.

Gethin my youngest son catches Sion and I carefully removing offside rear panels.

The removal of each panel is very time consuming as we ensure that nothing is damaged, as I am captured here by Gethin.

Gethin captures me in deep concentration as we begin to remove panels.  We have many fantastic photos of Gethin too hard at work but he doesn’t want any included on the website.  We therefore respect his wishes.

Sion is seen here in deep concentration.  He is so meticulous and careful in his approach, turning over very stone carefully, resulting in craftsmanship of the very highest standard.  It is a true pleasure being in his company and witnessing his talent and skill.

The panel under the offside rear emergency door removed carefully with damaged woodwork underneath in the process of being removed.

In order to remove rear panels, the rear bumper must also be removed.  Rear light fittings of CRG163 have now been removed as well as the offside rear bumper as progress is made.

We now move to the nearside rear bumper as we continue its removal as well as other panel fixing sections.

An image of the rear bumper removed.  This is the first time it has been removed since the vehicle was new in 1970.  On it’s removal we notice the colour cream and black underneath, being CRG163’s livery when new in 1970.

Some of the deteriorated woodwork removed from today’s work.

A closer image of the cream and black livery found underneath the removed rear bumper, not seen since the vehicle was new in 1970.
