The Tilling black overcoat (greatcoat) comes to light

The Tilling overcoat

The Tilling black overcoat or greatcoat was the standard winter uniform overcoat worn by Crosville drivers and conductors during the Tilling era of the company’s operations until 1972 comes to light.  This would have been the winter uniform worn by Crosville drivers and conductors on CRG163 when operating when new in 1970 between Liverpool and London.

These were heavy dark wool overcoats crafted for maximum warmth, double-breasted with eight shining buttons with the company name imprinted on each (Crosville initials pre 1930) white cuffs on the sleeves for visibility during hand-signaling.  The coats had a sturdy wool lining weighing several pounds.  They were ideal for harsh winter routes but bulky for milder days.  Caps would have yellow piping.

A new page will be added soon charting more information about the Tilling era uniform.

Original Crosville driver lapel badges already in the collection are placed on the driver overcoat as they would have originally appeared with a Crosville driver/conductor uniform hat badge added in the middle for the purpose of the photograph.
